I stumbled across this exhibit at Arlington National Cemetery when, too cold to walk back to the Metro just yet, I stopped in The Women In Military Service For America Memorial out of curiosity, and to warm up. And spent a long time and took a lot of pictures.
Faces of the Fallen is an exhibit of more than 1,300 individual portraits honoring America’s service men and women who died in Afghanistan and Iraq during the period October 2001 to November 11, 2004. It has been on view at the Women In Military Service For America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery since March 2005. Talented artists from across the country have donated these works as their gift to a grateful nation and ultimately to the families themselves.
It closes March, 2007. What I found most moving were the objects viewers had left: notes from relatives, fellow service members, and strangers. Cigarette packages — the way that people interact with the objects of these images with other objects. On the floor under one image, equipment that had clearly been to the Middle East, maybe belonged to the person depicted.

This is funny, but it can also be used to make a point: the French trailer for the movie March of the Penguins, which in French was March of the Emperor. Someone posted this to a visual studies mailing list: the difference between textual and visual records.
